Iron is a very brittle and needs further processing to become steel. Up until the 50's this was accomplished in the open-hearth furnace, replaced by the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) starting in the 60"s. After the blast furnace is tapped, the hot iron is transported to the BOF where it is transferred into a ladle and poured into the BOF vessel.
